Staying at Hotel Gate of Lapland, true to its name at the gateway to Lapland, is more than just a night in a cozy room. Here, the cycle of nature inspires awe throughout the year.

In our region, the seasons are traditionally divided into eight instead of four, as each transition phase has its unique characteristics. The changing seasons enrich both local life and travel experiences.

Here, you can experience the beauty of nature, tranquility, and a unique atmosphere. You can breathe in clean and fresh air—a memory that will last a long time.

Midwinter

When the land is covered in a white veil, the Tornionjokilaakso transforms into a true winter adventure wonderland. Midwinter offers opportunities for skiing, snowboarding, snowshoeing, and zooming through stunning winter landscapes on an e-fatbike or snowmobile. Experience the calming magic of ice fishing or create imaginative snow and ice sculptures in the unique light of Lapland.

Early Spring

In early spring, the days grow longer, and the sun begins to warm. The snowpack hardens, making skiing, walking, and cycling on the spring snow unforgettable experiences. This is the time when, with increasing light, nature gradually prepares to awaken after a long winter.

Spring and the Promise of Summer

Spring brings overflowing rivers, the first green signs, and the chirping of birds. Spring is a promise of warming days and ever-increasing light—a perfect time to enjoy the sun and outdoor activities while watching the progress of spring.

Summer and the Midnight Sun

Summer here at the Gate of Lapland is a celebration of the endless nights, when the sun does not dip below the horizon for weeks. The bright nights create a magical atmosphere, allowing you to hike, fish, or simply enjoy the greenery and tranquility of nature, even at night.

Harvest Autumn

The first weeks of autumn provide an abundance of ripe berries and mushrooms. Locals gather the autumn harvest from the forests, allowing the bounty to be enjoyed throughout the year. You can taste many delicacies straight from the forest, as Finland has "Everyone's Rights," meaning you can freely gather wild berries, mushrooms, and plants, except for some species protected by conservation laws.

Ruska – Autumn Colors

As the harvest season progresses, nature gradually begins to glow in the stunning colors of autumn. In Lapland, the autumn foliage is a breathtaking sight as the forests transform into shades of red, orange, and yellow. This is the perfect time for hiking and enjoying the gifts of nature. Walking in the forest with a local guide is enjoyable and safe, providing you with authentic local experiences and stories about the area.

Autumn Silence and Sky Fire

As autumn advances, the days shorten and evenings darken. This peaceful and dim season offers a chance to experience the silence of nature and prepare for the arrival of winter. On dark evenings, you can marvel at the Northern Lights and the starry sky. When the rivers and lakes are not yet frozen, reflections on the water surface double the Northern Lights experience. This season also brings the first snow.

Polar Night and Winter

At the end of November, the polar night begins, when the sun hardly rises above the horizon. The polar night offers magnificent peace and crisp frosts, and with the arrival of snow, the landscape transforms into a fairytale. You can head out to enjoy nature on a tranquil reindeer sleigh ride or a more adventurous husky safari.

Welcome to the Gate of Lapland to experience the wonders and adventures of the eight seasons!
